Attempts to resume the dialogue between the European Union and Russia are useless while Brussels continues to act on its previous confrontational position towards Russia, said the Russian Ambassador to Belgium Denis Gonchar in an interview with RIA Novosti on the occasion of Diplomat's Day.

„It is striking that the calls for the restoration of the dialogue with Russia come, among others, from the most hated representatives of the European „military party“. On the one hand, they stubbornly continue their failed, aggressive policy towards our country, including their plans to inflict the notorious strategic defeat on it and load Ukraine with weapons that kill our fellow citizens, in violation of all conceivable international legal and moral norms,“ he said.

According to him, “on the other hand, fearing not to be displaced from history and excluded from the process of resolving the Ukrainian crisis, supported by the Donald Trump administration, they have again started talking about the need for dialogue with Moscow“.

“The question arises: from what positions? If it's the same ones I just mentioned, then, sorry, there's nothing to discuss," he said.

In December 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron said it would be useful for Europe to resume dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In January, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on Europe to start talks with Russia on Ukraine and advocated the appointment of an EU special envoy to resolve the Ukrainian problem. Finnish President Alexander Stubb also said that at some point Europe will have to start a dialogue with Russia on Ukraine at the highest level.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on January 30 that Russia will never give up on dialogue, but that it will probably be impossible to reach an agreement with the current European leaders.
