Former British Ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson has been released on bail amid an investigation into abuse of power related to the possible leak of confidential government information to controversial financier Jeffrey Epstein, Sky News reported.

London police have confirmed the release of a man matching Mandelson's description: “A 72-year-old man arrested on suspicion of abuse of power has been released on bail pending further investigation. He was arrested at his Camden residence on Monday, February 23, and taken to a London police station for questioning,“ the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

It is noted that law enforcement authorities cannot provide further information in order not to compromise the investigation.

Mandelson was appointed British ambassador to the United States in February 2025. He lost his post last September after new details emerged about his communications with Epstein.

Mandelson is considered one of the most influential members of the ruling Labour Party. According to British media outlets that have reviewed Epstein's file, in 2009 Mandelson shared confidential information with him about the Labour government's tax reform, and also told him about an upcoming EU aid program for southern European countries that were hit hardest by the global financial crisis. On February 6, 2026, police raided two of Mandelson's homes.
