Isfahan nuclear facility suffers US and Israeli attack - 1

The nuclear facility in Isfahan province, central Iran, has suffered serious damage after a missile attack carried out on March 7 by the US and Israel, the Iranian news agency ISNA reported. There is no information about radiation contamination so far, Focus reports.

The Isfahan uranium conversion plant, put into operation for industrial tests in 2004, allows the conversion of concentrated uranium ore dust into uranium tetrafluoride and then into hexafluoride. These gases are fed to centrifuges to produce enriched uranium. In April 2009, a laboratory for the production of low-enrichment fuel suitable for nuclear power plants was opened at the site. In early 2024, Iran announced the construction of a new research reactor at the same complex.

Information about the attack was provided to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to Israeli and American sources, most of the highly enriched uranium is stored in underground tunnels in Isfahan, while the remaining stockpile is distributed between facilities in Fordow and Natanz. The uranium can be used both as fuel for nuclear reactors and for further enrichment to produce nuclear weapons, a claim Iran denies.
