The foreign ministers of France, Germany and Poland have issued a joint statement criticizing recent legislative changes in Georgia related to foreign funding and political activities, the Georgian public media outlet GPB reported, quoted by BTA.

According to them, the new provisions represent a deliberate violation of the country's commitments to the European Union, in particular its obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU.

"We, the foreign ministers of the Weimar Triangle (an organization founded by the foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland - ed.), express regret over the new legislation on foreign funding and political activities adopted by the Georgian parliament on March 4. It is evidence of the Georgian authorities' increasingly repressive approach towards civil society," the statement said.

The ministers said they fully supported the position of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed on 6 March. They said the latest amendments extended state control over political and public life in Georgia to unprecedented levels and restricted freedom of expression and assembly. They believe that they undermine the rule of law and put additional pressure on independent civil society, including independent media, human rights defenders, as well as experts and service providers.

The joint statement also stresses that through these new regulations, the Georgian authorities are deliberately violating their commitments to the European Union.

"We recall that it is the political course of the Georgian government since 2024 that has led to a de facto freeze on the EU accession process, as noted in the conclusions of the European Council in 2024 and assessed in the European Commission's report on enlargement in 2025", the ministers also stated.

In conclusion, they stressed their firm support for the Georgian people and civil society organizations who continue to work for the democratic and European future of the country, while at the same time reaffirming their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within the framework of international its recognized borders.
