Moscow will respond harshly to any attack on the buildings of Russian diplomatic missions in Ukraine, the Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti.

The ministry recalled that the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations is one of the key international legal documents regulating relations between states. The ministry also said that neither the severance of diplomatic relations nor the armed conflict affect the inviolability of diplomatic property.

“We proceed from the premise that these norms are also observed in relation to the buildings of Russian diplomatic and consular missions in Ukraine, which are state property of the Russian Federation“, the Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry added that any attack on diplomatic missions “will not go unanswered“.

On Saturday, the Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti that the building of the Ukrainian embassy in Moscow is state property and neither the severance of diplomatic relations nor the armed conflict affect the inviolability of diplomatic property.
