The US Treasury Department has decided to put President Donald Trump's signature on dollar bills for the 250th anniversary of the country's independence - the first time for a sitting head of state. The department announced this, according to Reuters.
The first $100 bills with the new signature will begin printing in June, with the changes being introduced on other bills as well. The treasurer's signature will be removed for the first time in 165 years, while the rest of the bill's design will remain unchanged.
On March 20, Reuters reported that the US Federal Art Commission, appointed by Trump, had approved the issuance of a commemorative gold coin with his image for the country's 250th anniversary. The 24-karat gold coin will be a collector's item and is not intended for circulation.
The decision drew criticism from Democrats. Senator Jeff Merkley said that monarchs and dictators put their faces on coins. However, as the agency recalled, historically, images of sitting presidents have appeared on commemorative coins before.
