Sixteen people, including students, were injured in a shooting at a school in the Turkish town of Siverek, Sanlufra district (southeastern Turkey), Turkish state television TRT Haber reported. The perpetrator was a former student of the school and committed suicide when he realized he would be caught, the governor of the district, Hasan Süldak, reported BTA.
The reason for the shooting this morning is still not clear. It is clear that the shooter was born in 2007, studied at the school until the ninth grade, then moved to study elsewhere. When he entered the school this morning, he fired a shotgun.
According to the online publication "Hurriyet", eyewitnesses reported that hostages were taken, including students. Another part of the students who were in the building tried to escape by jumping out of the window.
Initially, the attacker, who was hiding in the school itself, refused to surrender after being warned by the police teams sent to the scene. Special forces were sent in.
The governor of Şanlıurfa reported that 12 of the injured are currently receiving treatment in hospital. Four of them are teachers, 10 are students, one is a police officer, and one is a school cafeteria employee.
