Argentina has demanded negotiations over the Falkland Islands after the US threatened London that it would reconsider it - 1

The Argentine government has reaffirmed its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and called on the UK authorities to resume bilateral negotiations.

This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the country, Pablo Kirno.

“The Argentine Republic confirms its readiness to resume bilateral negotiations with the United Kingdom, which will allow a peaceful and definitive resolution of the sovereignty dispute and the end of this specific colonial situation, and thanks all representatives of the international community for their support for Argentina's sovereign rights over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, as well as over the adjacent maritime zones“, he wrote in X.

On April 24, a spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office of the United Kingdom said that the UK government does not intend to discuss the status of the Falkland Islands with the United States in any way and confirmed that London considers the territory its own.

Reuters reported earlier that the Pentagon is discussing options for punishing NATO allies for their reluctance to help the United States in war against Iran. One of the options mentioned is a review of Washington's position on the Falkland Islands. The US recognizes that the territory is administered by the United Kingdom. A spokesman for the British Prime Minister stressed that the United Kingdom will not be “forced“ to enter into a military conflict against Iran.

The Falkland Islands, located in the southwest Atlantic Ocean, have been the subject of a territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom for 200 years. In April 1982, an armed conflict broke out between the countries. The South American republic was defeated, losing 649 soldiers in two and a half months of fighting. British losses totaled 255. In March 2013, the inhabitants of the archipelago voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to keep the territory under British control. Argentina did not recognize the results of the plebiscite.
