NATO countries are working out scenarios for isolating the Kaliningrad region during military exercises, the ambassador at large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Artyom Bulatov told RIA Novosti.
“After the launch of the Joint Military Defense, NATO and the EU have significantly stepped up their efforts to establish control over logistical routes in the Baltic region, taking a number of steps to limit transport links with the Kaliningrad region and creating conditions for isolating the region in the event of further escalation of tensions in relations between Russia and the West“, the diplomat said.
Bulatov added that similar scenarios are being worked out during the military exercises of NATO.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko told RIA Novosti last week that Western countries are developing scenarios for a naval blockade and seizure of the Kaliningrad region during the Joint Military Defense (JMDD) exercises.
In January, former Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Darius Jurgelevičius announced that the alliance had a ready-made scenario for a blockade of Kaliningrad in the event of a direct confrontation with Moscow.
Artyom Bulatov warned that Russia would respond decisively to any attempt by NATO and the EU to block Kaliningrad. The diplomat cited Vladimir Putin's warning about the threat of an unprecedented escalation in an attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region as an important signal for them.
