The Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty has ended without a final document for the third time in a row due to the actions of the US and its allies, the Permanent Mission of Iran to the UN said.
“Excessive US demands are pushing the Treaty into free fall“, the statement said. Iran's Permanent Mission said that the Review Conference “has failed for the third time in a row due to obstructionism by the United States and its allies“. The Iranian side also warned that “without nuclear disarmament, it is impossible to imagine a future for the Treaty“.
Previously Do Hung Viet, Vietnam's permanent representative to the UN and chair of the conference, said the conference failed to reach consensus on a final document.
The 11th Review Conference of the Treaty began on April 27 at UN headquarters in New York. The conference is held every five years and brings together nearly all 191 states parties to assess its implementation in three main areas: non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The conference ended on Friday.
