Pope Francis called today in his Easter address to the faithful for a complete exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as for providing access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, world agencies reported, quoted by BTA.
„My thoughts today are directed above all to the victims of the many conflicts that are happening around the world, starting with the conflicts in Israel and Palestine, as well as in Ukraine.... Calling for respect for the principles of international law, I hope for a full exchange of all prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine – all against all!" - said the holy father from the balcony of the “Saint Peter” in front of about 60 thousand believers.
„Furthermore, I call again to guarantee the possibility of access to humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip, I call again for the quick release of the hostages kidnapped on October 7 and an immediate ceasefire in the Strip,”, the Pope added.
The Easter liturgy took place under strict security measures provided by the Italian authorities, DPA reported. The square was decorated as always with flowers and plants, many of them from the Netherlands. Believers enjoyed mild spring temperatures of around 20 degrees, but the wind was strong.
A senior cleric led the service on behalf of the 87-year-old pope, who is in poor health.
There was cheering as Francis passed the crowd in the popemobile after the mass, with many shouting: "Viva il Papa!" (Long live the Pope!).
Tight security measures have been stepped up this year following the recent terrorist attack on a concert hall near Moscow, which was claimed by the Afghanistan-based Islamic State terrorist group “Islamic State-Khorasan”.
Long queues formed at the entrances to the square as Italian police carried out checks.
After the liturgy, the Pope must deliver the Easter message and give his traditional blessing “Urbi et Orbi“ (Urbi et Orbi) – “To the city and to the world“, which is the solemn climax of the Easter holidays.
