The arrest of the former vice president of Ecuador was declared illegal, but he remains in prison - 1

A tribunal in Ecuador ruled on Friday that the arrest of former Vice President Jorge Glass was illegal, but indicated that he should remain in prison because of previous convictions, Reuters reported. The former vice president's lawyers announced that they will appeal, BTA reported.

Jorge Glass has been convicted twice of corruption and now faces new charges. He was arrested a week ago in a police raid at the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he has been living since December. The Ecuadorian police raid on the embassy was a serious breach of diplomatic norms and was condemned by numerous countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Nicaragua.

Glass' lawyers said the three-judge tribunal should declare his detention at the embassy illegal, arguing that the Ecuadorian government violated his human rights and international law by allowing security forces to enter a diplomatic mission.< /p>

Former President Rafael Correa, under whom Jorge Glass served between 2013 and 2017, said on Wednesday that Glass had attempted suicide and went on hunger strike to protest his imprisonment in a prison in Guayaquil. Glass' lawyer Sonia Vera confirmed this information.

Glass was taken to hospital on Monday, but was returned to jail the next day.
