US to China, Russia: Don't let AI make decisions about nuclear weapons deployment - 1

State Department of Arms Control in the US called on China and Russia not to allow artificial intelligence (AI) to make decisions about the deployment of nuclear weapons, Reuters and News.bg report.

Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence and Stability Paul Dean said during an online briefing that Washington has made a "clear and unequivocal commitment" that only the people should have full control over nuclear weapons . According to him, France and Great Britain have done the same.

"We would welcome such a statement from China and the Russian Federation. We think this is an extremely important norm of responsible behavior and we think it's something that would be welcome in the context of the P5," Paul Dean added, referring to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Joe Biden's administration is trying to deepen separate discussions with China on both nuclear weapons policy and the growth of artificial intelligence.

The Chinese Ministry of Defense has not yet commented.

The spread of artificial intelligence technology was one of the main topics during the meeting in Beijing between US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The two countries agreed to hold their first bilateral talks on artificial intelligence in the coming weeks, Blinken said on April 26, adding that they would share views on how best to manage risks and safety around the technology.

Reuters also recalled that as part of the normalization of military communications, US and Chinese officials resumed discussions on nuclear weapons in January, but formal arms control talks are not expected soon.

In February, China called on the major nuclear powers to conclude a treaty banning the first use of nuclear weapons against each other.
