Council of Europe: Refugees from war in Ukraine receive better treatment than other refugees - 1

Ukrainians who fled their homes because of the Russian invasion have received better treatment in comparison with those displaced by other wars and emergencies, reported the Commission for Combating Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) of the Council of Europe, calling on member states to support all refugees equally, reports Reuters, quoted by News.bg.

The ECRI report states that not all Ukrainian refugees received the same level of care. Specifically, it mentions that Roma with Ukrainian citizenship often find themselves in less favorable living conditions compared to other Ukrainians in similar situations.

The report also touched on the challenges faced by African nationals in Ukraine, who reportedly faced difficulties trying to cross the borders to safety. This disparity in attitudes extends beyond the Ukrainian crisis, with the report noting significant differences in the quality of services and reception centers between Ukrainians and refugees from other parts of the world.

Johann Fristed, Executive Secretary of ECRI, emphasized the need for a new standard for the acceptance of all people, regardless of their origin. The report suggests that solidarity with Ukrainians may have been stronger because of perceived similarities in appearance and culture, something ECRI President Bertil Cottier hinted at during a press conference.

Despite some instances of hostility, the general public discourse remains supportive of Ukrainians. However, the level of support has not always been extended to people from other regions, with the report highlighting an increase in incidents of anti-Muslim hatred and a rise in anti-Semitism in several European countries.

The ECRI report calls on Member States to offer equal protection and support to all displaced persons, calling for a move away from stereotypes and discrimination. By adopting a more inclusive approach, the hope is that all refugees, regardless of their nationality, skin color or religion, can receive the care and support they need during their most difficult times.
