Macron called for unity against the extreme right in the second round - 1

French President Emmanuel Macron called for a "great unity" against the extreme right in the second round of early parliamentary elections in France in a week, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.

Macron made his appeal after exit polls showed the "National Assembly" leads convincingly in today's first round of the elections.

The early vote was called by the president following the victory of the far-right formation in the European Parliament elections in the country earlier this month. The decision was interpreted by analysts as a risky political bet.

"The high turnout in the first round... testifies to the importance of this vote for all our compatriots and to a desire to clarify the political situation," Macron said in a written statement. "Faced with the "National Assembly", the time has come for a large, clear democratic and republican unification for the second round," he urged.

The second round of elections will be held next Sunday, July 7.
