Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received recognition from Russia for his attempts to mediate the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev, Reuters and TASS report. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov praised Orban's initiative.
During a call last Friday with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, Orbán explored the possibility of a peace deal, which did not sit well with EU leaders who expressed concerns about making compromises with Moscow . Despite the backlash, the Kremlin showed appreciation for Orbán's commitment to resolving the conflict.
„Mr Orbán is sincerely trying to understand the main issues by consulting primary sources. We highly appreciate his efforts”, said Peskov.
The Kremlin spokesman further emphasized the complexity of the situation by pointing to the numerous contradictions between the parties involved, and Orbán's commitment was recognized as a significant and serious attempt to find a common language.
Orban had planned to travel to Washington for the upcoming NATO meeting. Amid the speculation, Peskov clarified that Putin did not use Orbán as a messenger to deliver specific messages to the US president, Joe Biden, or other NATO leaders.
