Glavchev: Strengthening NATO and support for Ukraine are the main topics of the NATO summit - 1

Strengthening NATO and support for Ukraine are the main topics of the NATO summit in Washington, acting Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dimitar Glavchev said today, BTA reported.

He spoke on arrival for the meeting of the heads of state and government of the NATO member countries within the framework of the summit of the alliance in Washington.

"The most global topic is how to make NATO (a stronger organization)", Glavchev emphasized. He explained that he is betting on the collective, but for this to happen, it is necessary for each member country to strengthen its defense.

The other main topic is to show support for Ukraine, the Prime Minister continued. He noted that there is nothing unnatural in this, since it is clear to everyone that one side in the war - Russia, is the aggressor, and the other - Ukraine, is the victim.

NATO's assistance to Ukraine is based on international law, according to which every country has the right to independence and territorial integrity, Glavchev emphasized. He added that, accordingly, the Bulgarian position is the same as that of the alliance as a whole.

All the more so since it was approved by seven decisions of the National Assembly, said the Prime Minister. He confirmed that he is presenting at the meeting the Bulgarian position developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense and approved by the Council of Ministers. It reflects the consistent Bulgarian position in support of Ukraine and there is nothing surprising in it, he summarized.

Glavchev said he had met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at many forums recently. "Of course, we will meet him here as well," continued the Prime Minister. "And (Zelensky) knows that he can count on Bulgaria as a supporter of Ukraine in this fair" war for her, he noted and emphasized that Bulgarian foreign policy reflects the decisions of the National Assembly.

"Yesterday, President (of the USA Joe) Biden and I were able to exchange a few words (ed. note: during yesterday's solemn commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the creation of NATO). However, they are enough," said Glavchev. "We confirmed that we are a reliable and loyal ally in NATO, and for his part (Biden) said that we have a very key role on the eastern flank of the alliance," summed up the Bulgarian Prime Minister. He drew attention to the fact that the US president specifically mentioned Bulgaria in his speech at the anniversary ceremony.

Glavchev also said that he talked the most at yesterday's ceremony with the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, Hristiyan Mitskoski. We are of the same opinion that the tension should be reduced and bilateral relations should be normalized. However, I told him that the candidate countries for membership in the European Union must comply with the requirements. This is the position not only of Bulgaria, but also of the EU, said the Prime Minister.
