Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the US Congress last night to thank for military aid, as well as to strengthen his relations with the American legislators, who are about to vote on more packages of arms supplies to his country, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
Possible support for Kiev may change in the future if Donald Trump returns to the White House after the presidential elections in November, the agency points out.
Zelensky's previous visit to the US Congress was in December last year. He then appealed to US congressmen not to delay aid to his country. In April, the US Congress approved a $61 billion military aid package for Ukraine after months of political wrangling, freeing up important weapons for Ukrainian troops, Reuters recalls.
Now Zelensky is thanking the lawmakers by awarding Ukrainian state medals to the leaders of the majority of the Democratic Party in the US Senate (the upper house of the US Parliament) - Chuck Schumer, and the minority of the Republicans there - Mitch McConnell.
"This is an incredibly important mission and we must stand behind Ukraine," said the chairman of the US Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, quoted by Reuters.
