Greece battles deadly fire on Lesvos island - 1

Greece is fighting with a deadly fire on the island of Lesvos. The weather in the country remains very hot, with temperatures in some parts exceeding 40 degrees, reports "Bloomberg", quoted by News.bg.

A person has died in a burnt-out car on Lesvos, where authorities are investigating whether the vehicle was burnt by a forest fire or was involved in an accident that caused the fire.

Elsewhere, almost 100 firefighters, supported by 11 planes and five helicopters, are trying to contain a wildfire in Corinthia, a region in the northeastern Peloponnese. Authorities are also battling a fire in Evros, a region on very high alert for Friday.

Forest fires have been a risk in Greece and other parts of the Mediterranean for decades, but global warming is intensifying the threat they pose. Climate change puts 2024 on track to be the world's hottest year ever, increasing extreme weather events such as storms, floods and fires.

Greek authorities have placed several regions of the country on high fire alert, with hundreds of outbreaks since early June destroying property and businesses.

At the initiative of the European Union (EU), Greece also sent planes to fight the fires in Albania.

Albanian Defense Minister Niko Peleschi reported 23 fires in the past 24 hours, but only two remain active in the south of the country.
