Riots broke out in the northern English city of Southport, where three children died and several other children and two adults are in a serious condition in hospital after the knife attack, for which a 17-year-old youth was detained, an AFP reporter quoted by BNR reported.
About 100 protesters lit fires and started clashes with the police. Thick clouds of smoke can be seen near the area where law enforcement and demonstrators are. Videos on social media appear to show a police van on fire.
Among those present, disapproving shouts and questions were also heard: "How many more people must die on the street, Mr. Prime Minister. How many more children?".
Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Southport to pay tribute to the victims of Monday's attack and their families. Starmer thanked members of the emergency services, saluted the firefighters and paramedics, saying he was proud of their work. "I really want to draw attention to the fact that some of the children were saved thanks to what you did," said the British Prime Minister. Starmer made a brief stop at the scene where he laid flowers.
