12-year-olds go on trial over UK riots - 1

Children as young as 12 are expected to appear in court, at a time when charges continue to be brought against suspects in connection with mass public disturbances in Great Britain, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Lucy Connolly, wife of Conservative West Northamptonshire town councilor Raymond Connolly, also appeared in court yesterday, accused of encouraging people on social media to attack hotels housing asylum seekers. She wrote the post in “X“ on the day three girls were fatally stabbed in Southport.

The Crown Prosecution Service said two 12-year-olds had been charged with violent disorder, with one expected to appear at Liverpool Juvenile Court and the other at Manchester Magistrates' Court.

They are believed to be the youngest to appear in court in connection with the riots.

Also in Manchester, Niall Charnuck, 31, admitted throwing a firebomb at police during the “disgraceful riots” in central Bolton on August 4.

A 41-year-old man was jailed for 2 years and 8 months at Sheffield Crown Court for his involvement in the riot outside a hotel housing refugees in Rotherham.

Ricky Hardman, who runs a transport company, was arrested after a photograph from the August 4 riots, showing him brandishing a wooden pole, was published in a national newspaper.

At Teesside Crown Court, a teenager was jailed for 18 months after being seen “celebrating” after throwing a rock at a police officer.

18-year-old Cole Stewart is one of about thirty people who gathered in front of a mosque in the city on August 5.

Stewart was seen smashing a large rock into small pebbles which he pelted the police with and was later seen “celebrating with his hands in the air” when one of the pebbles hit an officer in the arm.

So far 927 people have been arrested and 466 people have been charged in connection with the recent disturbances, a spokesman for the National Council of Police Chiefs (NCCP) said today.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, to date 273 people have been charged in connection with the riots, and the NSPN figures are higher because they also include charges brought solely by the police, without the involvement of the Crown Prosecution Service.
