The presidents of Romania and of Moldova – Klaus Iohannis and Maya Sandu signed today in Chisinau a Joint Declaration on bilateral cooperation to strengthen the resilience of the Republic of Moldova, Agerpress agency reported, quoted by BTA.

The document, which contains eight points, envisages Romania and the Republic of Moldova to cooperate in order to make progress at the political and technical level of the negotiations for the accession of Moldova to the European Union. The Republic of Moldova aims to be ready for accession by 2030

Moldova, together with Ukraine, started in June this year. EU accession negotiations.

The declaration signed by the two presidents envisages, even in the current regional context, that Romania and Moldova will continue to work for progress in the field of military and security cooperation in order to strengthen Moldova's defense potential. According to the text of the document, "special attention will be paid to strengthening the resilience of Moldova in the conditions of hybrid threats, disinformation, undermining of democratic processes and the rule of law".

Romania and the Republic of Moldova will also improve bilateral cooperation in the legal sphere, border management, the fight against organized and economic crime, and the fight against money laundering.

Another priority mentioned in the declaration is the energy connectivity between the two countries and the development of the energy network of the Republic of Moldova, including through integration into the European market mechanisms and the security of energy supply.

The declaration also mentions the determination of the two countries in providing support to Ukraine to “overcome the consequences caused by the aggression of Russia”.

“Romania and the Republic of Moldova will cooperate to facilitate cross-border flows of goods with a view to further use of the corridors of solidarity, to facilitate efforts to rebuild Ukraine, as well as to continue the trilateral dialogue on current issues” says in the text quoted by Agerpress.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is on an official visit today to the Republic of Moldova on the day both countries celebrate Romanian Language Day.

Romanians on both banks of the Prut River share a linguistic, cultural and historical community, Iohannis pointed out in a message on the occasion of the holiday.

“Since last year, the Romanian language has been an official language in the Republic of Moldova, with President Maia Sandu promulgating a law replacing the term “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language“. This was a decisive step for the restoration of the scientific truth that Romanians on both sides of the Prut share a linguistic, cultural and historical commonality. Our future is undoubtedly a common future in the European Union”, said the Romanian President.

Iohannis noted that the Romanian language is studied in 59 universities in 37 countries around the world, “from Canada to Indonesia, from Finland to Morocco”.

At a press conference after the one-on-one talks with Maia Sandu, the Romanian president said that the start of Moldova's accession negotiations to the EU is one of the “most important moments” in bilateral relations during his two mandates.

European and Euro-Atlantic integration “is the path that the Republic of Moldova must follow”, just as Romania did, declared Klaus Iohannis.
