Newly appointed French Prime Minister Michel Barnier promised tonight that he would work with "all those of good will" for more respect and unity in the politically divided country after months of political upheaval, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
"The French today need respect, unity and pacification and they expressed this need (in early parliamentary elections)", Barnier said in his first speech after taking office, standing next to his predecessor Gabriel Attal.

Earlier in the day, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Barnier, the EU's former Brexit negotiator, as the country's prime minister, tasking him with reuniting France and ending the political paralysis that followed the election.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz meanwhile congratulated Barnier on the appointment.
"Our two countries are connected in a very special way - two strong partners at the center of Europe," Scholz's letter said. The German chancellor added that he looks forward to the governments of the two largest economies in the European Union continuing to work together for the benefit of the countries and Europe.
