Russia said today that its armed forces had established full control of a town in eastern Ukraine as it advanced toward the strategically important city of Pokrovsk, Reuters reported, citing BTA.
Russian forces, which have controlled about a fifth of Ukraine's territory since invading the country in February 2022, are trying to take over the entire Donbass region.
The Ministry of Defense of Russia said that the population center of Novogrodovka has been "liberated," TASS reported.
It is located 12 km from Pokrovsk, which is an important road and rail junction for Ukrainian forces in the region. Novokhrodivka had a population of 14,000 before the war.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces described earlier today the situation around Pokrovsk as "tense" and said that fierce fighting was taking place in several surrounding towns, including Novokhrodivka, Ukrinform reported.
