Historic Amazon drought drops Amazon River levels to record low - 1

The worst drought in Amazon history has lowered water levels in the Amazon River to a historic low. In some areas, riverbeds that were previously navigable have dried up, reports Reuters, quoted by BTA.

Solimoes – one of the main tributaries of the mighty Amazon River, which rises from the Peruvian Andes – fell to its lowest level in history in Tabatinga, a Brazilian city on the border with Colombia. Downstream Solimoes is completely dry.

Nearby Lake Tefe, where more than 200 freshwater dolphins died during last year's drought, has also dried up.

"We are in a critical year,” says Greenpeace representative Romulo Batista.

For the second consecutive year, a critical drought is reported to be destroying much of Brazil's vegetation and fueling wildfires in South America.

"Climate change is no longer a problem for the future, 10 or 20 years from now. It is here and with much greater force than we expected," Batista added.

Earlier, because of the drought, ships from the Second World War began to appear on the surface of the Danube. Ships from Nazi Germany's Black Sea Fleet were discovered near the Serbian town of Prahovo. Some of them still have turrets, conning bridges, broken masts and twisted hulls.
