Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said today that the election of Donald Trump as US President may lead to a reduction in aid to Ukraine, reported France Press.
Donald Trump's victory carries several risks, including one that affects one of the "existential priorities" of Sweden: military and economic aid to Kiev, which may be reduced under this new administration, he said, quoted by AFP.
"There is a risk of a reduction in engagement in Ukraine," Christershon said, but declined to make a definite prediction in that direction.
"On the contrary, we accept that the US is the largest military donor in Ukraine by far. If the Scandinavian and Baltic countries are added together, we are in second place. Then comes Germany”, the Swedish leader added.
Earlier this year, Donald Trump threatened that if elected, he would no longer defend NATO countries that do not fulfill their commitment to contribute to the alliance's budget.
Relations between Stockholm and Washington have been “good under a variety of administrations”, Ulf Christershon insisted.
However, he fears a return to economic protectionism in the US.
"This is an obvious risk and it means a lot for a country like Sweden, which is extremely dependent on exports and trade," said the Swedish Prime Minister.
The Swedish prime minister believes that Donald Trump will abandon transatlantic and European ties in favor of Asia-Pacific ones and that a trade war between China and the US cannot be ruled out.
Sweden ended its military neutrality after the outbreak of war in Ukraine by applying for NATO membership, which became a fact in March this year.
In 2024, it met NATO's defense spending target, with Sweden already allocating 2.2% of its gross domestic product to defence.
Earlier today, Wolf Christershon congratulated Donald Trump on the social network "X", expressing the expectation that the two would "work together". and to continue the "excellent relationship between the United States and Sweden as friends and allies".
