Hundreds of Romanians, mostly young people, gathered in the center of Bucharest last night to protest against far-right presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, who surprisingly won on the first round of the presidential elections, NOVA reported.
A small group of Georgescu supporters also took to the streets of the capital in support of their candidate, just hours after Romania's Constitutional Court ordered a recount of votes from the first round of the presidential election.
Before the first round of voting, forecasts were giving single-digit results for the 62-year-old independent politician Calin Georgescu. He will face centrist challenger Elena Lasconi in the run-off election on December 8. Meanwhile, parliamentary elections are scheduled for Sunday.
"I am here today to protest against this fascist movement that is coming to Romania, against this leader of theirs, Calin Georgescu, who appeared out of nowhere, apparently sponsored by Putin and Moscow, and we are fighting against all the things that went wrong during this campaign. Especially that he was not checked, his funding was not checked," said Mihai, a protester against Georgescu.
"We fully support Mr. Georgescu, who is currently the subject of a media lynching that he does not deserve. We, as normal people, would like Romania to get up on its knees and regain its dignity and sovereignty," stressed Georgescu's supporter Oana Eftimie.
