Germany could provide to Ukraine long-range "Taurus" missiles, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz said today after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, France Press reported, quoted by BTA.
" President Zelensky knows our position regarding the Taurus missiles. Nothing has changed in that regard. As of today, our position remains the same," said Mertz.
The CDU, which is a leading force among Germany's conservative opposition, is expected to win early parliamentary elections in February. If this happens, Friedrich Merz will probably be the main contender for the post of chancellor.
Support for Ukraine
Mertz emphasized his commitment to the Ukrainian cause, noting:
"We must do everything possible to allow Ukraine to exercise its right to unrestricted self-defense in order to end this war as quickly as possible."
Taurus missiles, which have a long range and precision, are key to strengthening Ukrainian defense capabilities.
Importance for future policy
The debate over the provision of military aid remains a central theme in German domestic politics. The possible removal of restrictions on the supply of weapons such as the "Taurus" could be a sign of a significant change in Germany's policy towards the conflict in Ukraine.
