The war in Ukraine will probably end next year through negotiations. This was announced by Julian Barnes, a columnist for the American newspaper The New York Times.
He believes that the war would have ended regardless of the outcome of the US elections, because "Ukraine and Russia do not have enough soldiers", but the victory of Republican Donald Trump will "accelerate peace talks".
"This is bad news for Kiev. Russian troops are advancing east. Ukraine still has weapons, but its troops are scattered. Intelligence agencies believe that it will soon run out of soldiers. Republicans are reluctant to approve additional aid, and Ukrainian authorities know that without a significant increase in aid, the fight will soon be over,“ Barnes emphasizes.
The key issue for Ukraine will not be territories, but guarantees of security in the future. At the same time, NATO membership “is not on the agenda”. Trump may want to be seen as seeking concessions from Russian President Vladimir Putin and persuade him, for example, to allow the Ukrainian state some economic integration with Europe, the columnist adds.
