The most densely populated and second largest Canadian province - Ontario (with a population of about 14 million people, i.e. nearly 40% of the population), is considering the possibility to ban the sale of alcohol from the US on its territory if the newly elected US President Donald Trump decides to impose a 25% import tariff on all Canadian goods. This was reported by The Washington Times, citing anonymous sources in the provincial government. Ontario is home to the country's capital, Ottawa, as well as Canada's largest city, Toronto.
Πo information from sources, local authorities are also condemning restrictions on exports to the United States of key minerals needed for the production of batteries for electric vehicles, as well as the closure of access for American companies to government contracts in the province Ontario.
Πp these measures may only add to the already controversial restrictions on electricity exports to the US states of Michigan, New York and Minnesota.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has said that if Trump imposes trade barriers, Canada will stop supplying electricity and energy to the US. The politician made this statement following a meeting of the leaders of all Canadian regions with the country's Minister-President Justin Trudeau, on the topic of tariffs.
The United States, Mexico and Canada are bound by a trilateral agreement that envisages the creation of a free trade area between these countries. On November 25, however, Trump announced that immediately after taking office he would impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico, due to illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
