Members of the center-left German Social Democratic Party (SPD) were attacked by a suspected group of right-wing extremists while they were holding a political campaign in Berlin. This was reported by DPA, quoted by BTA, citing a statement from the Social Democratic Party.
The Berlin police said that it is believed that the attackers intended to attend far-right radical demonstrations in the eastern part of the German capital, where they had traveled from other cities in the country.
The incident occurred around noon on the Kranoldplatz square in the southwestern suburb of Lichterfeld, a police spokesman added.
A verbal argument broke out between the suspected attackers and people running a campaign stand of the German Social Democratic Party, after which an attack on party representatives followed, the spokesman noted.
Five people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to the SPD, the suspected attackers are right-wing extremists.
Expected on 23 February, early parliamentary elections will be held in Germany after the collapse of the coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is a member of the German Social Democratic Party.
