Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that she is a friend of Elon Musk and, in her opinion, this is beneficial for the country.
“I can be a friend of Elon Musk and at the same time head the government that was the first in Europe to adopt a law regulating the activities of private individuals in space. I have excellent relations with a huge number of people, but this does not mean that I obey anyone. I do not allow any external interference and I defend national interests“, she said, speaking in the upper house (Senate) of parliament.
Meloni noted that Musk's figure had ceased to suit the center-left parties that opposed him, as soon as the entrepreneur supported Donald Trump's candidacy for US president.
The entrepreneur has repeatedly commented on his page in X on domestic political issues in Italy. Meloni, who came to power a little over two years ago, has developed a good relationship with outgoing US President Joe Biden. She has already contacted Trump, who previously called her “fantastic”. Meloni has been criticized by the opposition and opponents for being too “submissive” to the US. For this, she was also criticized by former Prime Minister and former head of the European Commission Romano Prodi, to whom she responded with mirror accusations of a lack of any independence in decision-making, including in the adoption of the single European currency.
