More than a third of Liberal Party MPs in the Canadian parliament want Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down as leader of the political force, the CBC reported.
According to party sources, more than 50 Liberal MPs adhere to this position, although only 21 MPs have stated this publicly. In total, the Liberals have 153 seats in the Canadian parliament.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland announced on December 16 that she was resigning because Trudeau decided to transfer her to another job.
On the same day, the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Sean Fraser, also announced his resignation.
This prompted criticism of the prime minister from the opposition and public figures, who demanded his immediate resignation, as he could not control his cabinet. Moreover, several Liberal MPs spoke out in favor of Trudeau's resignation as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. In the evening of the same day, the politician announced that he would not leave his post.
As reported by the CBC on December 21, some representatives of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada believe that if Trudeau resigns, Freeland could lead the party.
