South Korean opposition threatens impeachment of interim president Han Deok-soo - 1

South Korea's main opposition party, the Democratic Party, has issued a stern warning to interim president Han Deok-soo that it will impeach him if he does not promulgate a law establishing a special commission, quoted by BTA.

The commission's goal will be to investigate ousted president Yun Suk-yeol's failed attempt to impose martial law.

The complicated situation with Yun Suk-yeol's impeachment

Prime Minister Han took office after Yun was removed on December 14, but the country's Constitutional Court has not yet given a final decision on his impeachment. The Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament, has demanded an investigation into Yun's actions, including his attempted sedition and allegations against his wife related to investigations into luxury purchases and scandals.

The accusations against Han and the opposition's reactions

The Democratic Party claims that Han assisted Yun's attempt to impose martial law by providing information to the police. The leader of the party's parliamentary group, Park Chan-dee, said that any attempt to postpone the special commission law would be considered support for "sedition" and would lead to immediate impeachment proceedings against the prime minister.

Han Deok-su and his political attempts to prevent martial law

Despite the accusations, Han has said that he tried to prevent Yun from declaring martial law and apologized for failing. He also stated that his behavior was not intended to serve as an agent of the "rebel".

Potential for legal proceedings and resistance from Yun

As Yun's impeachment trial continues, the opposition has accused the former president of attempting to obstruct the judicial investigation and rejecting subpoenas from the Constitutional Court. There is also tension surrounding the ongoing investigation, with police failing to gain access to Yun's office despite multiple attempts.

Review of investigations and police actions

The joint investigation team, including the police and the Office of the Prosecutor General, has made a second attempt to question Yun. While it is not yet clear whether he will appear, the investigation team said it has taken measures to preserve evidence, such as a secure telephone server.
