The Taliban Ministry of Economy in Kabul has again called on all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Afghanistan to stop hiring women, BTA reports.
Taliban authorities have warned that the licenses of organizations that fail to comply will be revoked, DPA reports.
The order banning women from working in NGOs came into effect today, and is a repeat of a similar directive issued in December 2022, when the Taliban demanded that all NGOs stop hiring women until further notice.
Since regaining power in 2021, following the withdrawal of US forces from the country, the Taliban have imposed a ban on women from continue their education beyond primary school.
They initially claimed that the measure was temporary and would be lifted once a safe learning environment was provided, but the ban remains in effect.
The Taliban justify their actions by the need to uphold “laws and social norms“ in Afghanistan, as well as to ensure public safety.
Despite accusations of restricting women's rights, the authorities claim that they have issued almost 9,000 work permits to women during their rule, adding that many women continue to work in the country.
