Gaza's population has shrunk by 6% since the start of the war with Israel nearly 15 months ago, as some 100,000 Palestinians have fled the enclave while more than 55,000 are believed to be dead, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS).

Some 45,500 Palestinians - more than half of whom are women and children - have been killed since the start of the war, while another 11,000 are missing, the bureau said, citing figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Gaza's population has thus fallen by about 160,000 during the war to 2.1 million, with more than a million, or 47% of the total, children under 18 years old, PCBS said.

It added that Israel had "unleashed brutal aggression against Gaza, targeting all forms of life there; people, buildings and vital infrastructure... entire families have been erased from the civil registry. There have been catastrophic human and material losses".

„Israel's Foreign Ministry said the PCBS data was "fabricated, inflated and manipulated in order to defame Israel".
