Newly elected US President Donald Trump announced that he will attend the funeral of former US President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100 on Sunday, Reuters reports, quoted by FOCUS.
Upon entering the New Year's party that Trump is hosting at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, he answered a reporter's question whether he would attend the funeral.
"I will go. I will be there. We have an invitation", Trump said. He did not say whether he had spoken to the former US president's relatives.
The funeral ceremonies for Carter's death will be held from January 4 to 9 in Georgia and Washington.
On Tuesday, the coffin will be flown to Washington and displayed in the central rotunda of the Capitol so that members of Congress and the public can say goodbye to it. On the last day of mourning - January 9 - the body of the 39th US president will be taken to the Washington Cathedral, where a memorial service will be held. After that, the coffin will be sent by special plane to Plains, where Carter will be buried.
Carter, who was US president from 1977 to 1981, died on December 29 at the age of 100 at his home in Georgia. Under Carter, the United States and the Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty in 1979. Due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Carter decided not to submit this document for approval in the Senate of Congress, banned the supply of wheat from the United States to the USSR, and ordered a boycott of the Moscow Olympics.
After leaving the White House, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize. The prize was awarded to him in 2002 for his efforts to peacefully resolve international conflicts and fight for human rights.
