A winter storm and sub-zero temperatures have frozen several US states in the northeastern part of the country, Reuters reports, quoted by News.bg.

More than 60 million people have been affected by the bad weather.

The storm is moving towards the East Coast, where the capital, Washington, D.C., is bracing for heavy snowfall on the day of a key session of the US Congress. Lawmakers will gather to certify the election of Donald Trump as president.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson, assured that the session will take place, despite the difficult conditions. Federal offices in the capital, however, remained closed due to the dangerous weather conditions.

In Kansas and parts of northwestern Missouri, roads are covered with snow and ice, making travel difficult. A section of Interstate 70 in Kansas was closed. Authorities urged residents to limit travel to essential travel.

Heavy snowfall is expected in Ohio, while schools in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Washington and Philadelphia remained closed.

The governors of Kansas, Kentucky, Arkansas, West Virginia and Virginia declared states of emergency, preparing to deal with the snow crisis and the danger to the population.
