Edmundo Gonzalez visits Guatemala after Maduro's inauguration - 1

Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez landed in Guatemala yesterday, just days after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro took office for a third term, the Associated Press reports, quoted by BTA.

Guatemala Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez confirmed to the AP that Gonzalez is in Guatemala, where he will meet with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo.

Gonzalez, who is recognized by several countries as the winner of Venezuela's presidential election, said he intends to return to Venezuela to take over the presidency. However, on January 10, when Maduro took office, Gonzalez admitted that he could not return to the country at the moment, as security conditions did not allow for such a move.

Before visiting Guatemala, Gonzalez was on a six-day visit to the Dominican Republic. According to an airport official in the Dominican Republic, he left the country on a private plane.

Venezuela's electoral commission declared Maduro the winner of the election on July 28 last year. However, the Venezuelan opposition continues to claim that their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, was the real winner of the presidential election.
