The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, which holds the BRICS presidency, announced the accession of Nigeria as a partner country of the association.
The Brazilian authorities emphasized that BRICS and Nigeria have common interests, since the African republic, like the association, actively promotes the strengthening of cooperation between countries of the global South and advocates for the reform of international organizations.
Brazil became the chairman of BRICS on January 1. In 2024, the association was headed by Russia, the key event during its chairmanship was the summit in Kazan on October 22-24, at which it was decided to create a category of partner countries.
The first partners were Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
Indonesia was also initially listed as a BRICS partner, but on January 6, Brazilian authorities announced that the country had become a full member of the community.
