Today is a day of national mourning in Turkey due to the tragedy in the Kartalkaya ski resort, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced last night, quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio. 76 people died in a fire in a hotel in the resort.
The serious incident took place in the Kartalkaya resort in the Bolu Mountains, northwestern Turkey.
The deadly fire broke out in the 12-story four-star hotel “Grand Kartal“. It was extinguished with the efforts of 400 firefighters.
After what happened, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya arrived in the Kartalkaya resort along with several other members of the government. He said nine people, including the hotel manager, were detained in the case. Dozens of injured people are still being treated in hospitals in the area. There were 238 guests in the hotel. In an attempt to save themselves, some jumped from windows or tried to lower themselves on sheets tied together. Others wandered through the smoke in the corridors to get to a lower floor. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed that all those responsible for the tragedy at the ski resort would be punished.
