Four people died, one was seriously injured, after a cable car fell to the ground near the southern Italian city of Naples, DPA reported, BTA reported.
The cable car fell to the ground after one of its supporting cables snapped.
The accident occurred on Monte Faito, a peak about 45 km southeast of Naples, which offers a view of the sea. Visibility at the time of the accident was poor due to thick fog.
"The cable car at the top has crashed, we fear there are casualties," wrote on "Facebook" Umberto De Gregorio, head of the company that operates the cable car, was quoted by the Italian news agency ANSA. De Gregorio called the incident a “tragedy“.
More than a dozen other passengers were rescued from other cabins using ropes. Rescue helicopters were also sent. Rescue work was hampered by fog.
The cable car has been in operation since 1952. The journey usually takes just under 10 minutes.
There was already a fatal accident there in 1960, when four people died and more than 30 were injured when a cabin fell.
