Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei expressed deep concern over rising tensions between India and Pakistan. In a statement quoted by the Iranian news agency IRNA, he called on both sides to exercise restraint and avoid confrontation, BTA reports.
Bagaei stressed the Islamic Republic's principled position on the need to respect national sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that the use of force in international relations must be avoided.
He noted that the escalation of tensions and possible clashes between India and Pakistan - two countries with which Iran maintains friendly and long-standing relations - are causing serious concern in Tehran.
The speaker expressed hope that both sides would prioritize self-restraint in order to limit tensions and prevent further escalation. According to him, this is key to preventing third parties, especially Israel, from taking advantage of the crisis.
