North Korea fired several ballistic missiles, likely short-range, into the Sea of Japan, Yonhap news agency reported, citing the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.
“We detected several projectiles, which are assessed to be short-range ballistic missiles, launched at around 08:10 (01:10 Bulgarian time) from the Wonsan area into the Sea of Japan“, the agency quoted the committee as saying.
Seoul initially reported the launch of a ballistic missile, without specifying other details.
„Our armed forces have increased surveillance in case of additional launches. We are exchanging information on „North Korean ballistic missiles“ with the United States and Japan, and we are maintaining full readiness“, the military of the southern neighbor added.
The last time Pyongyang fired several ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan was on March 10, when the United States and South Korea began large-scale „Freedom Shield“ exercises.
The current launch was the second since Donald Trump took office as US president on January 20. Previously, North Korean launches this year were on January 6 and 14.
