The American political scientist, considered one of the founders of the theory of neoliberalism in international relations, author of the concept of “soft power” Joseph Nye died at the age of 89, the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University announced.
“Joseph Nye, a Harvard professor emeritus whose ideas about the nature of power in international relations influenced generations of politicians, academics and students and earned him a reputation as one of the world's most renowned political thinkers, has died at the age of 89,“ the university announced.
Nye spent six decades as a professor at Harvard, developing concepts of “soft power“ and neoliberalism, the school noted.
Under US President Bill Clinton (1993-2001), Nye was assistant secretary of defense and chairman of the National Intelligence Council. From 1995 to 2004, he was dean of the Harvard School of Government. The concept of “soft power“ refers to the ability of states to achieve their goals without the use of military force and coercion.
