Pakistan opened "unprovoked fire" on Thursday evening along the Line of Control in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army said.
“On the intervening night of May 7-8, posts of the Pakistani Army resorted to unprovoked firing with small arms and artillery across the Line of Control in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Ahnova in Jammu and Kashmir“, the Indian Army said, quoted by ANI.
“Indian Army responded proportionately“, the statement said.
India-Pakistan relations have deteriorated sharply since the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali. India has said it has evidence that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence was involved in the attack. New Delhi and Islamabad have imposed mutual restrictive measures, suspended bilateral agreements and closed their airspace to each other's aircraft.
On the night of May 7, the Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor, striking nine targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, where they said they were "based terrorists". More than 70 people were killed and over 60 injured, NDTV reported, citing its sources.
According to the Pakistani military, 26 people were killed and 46 were injured in the strikes. Islamabad then closed its airspace for 48 hours and launched retaliatory strikes. As a result, 15 people were killed and 48 injured along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Indian side.
