Chinese President Xi Jinping called on China and France to act as reliable forces to maintain international order, promote global economic growth and be drivers of progressive multilateral cooperation. This was made clear during a phone call between Xi and French President Emmanuel Macron, Xinhua and AFP reported, BTA reports.
In the call, Xi stressed that the two countries should jointly safeguard the authority and role of the United Nations, uphold the rules of international trade and the global economic order, and adhere to the principles of genuine multilateralism.
The two leaders also discussed the ongoing trade tensions between China and the European Union. President Macron announced on the social network “X“ that he and Xi had agreed to work towards a swift resolution to the French cognac issue. The issue became topical after Beijing imposed temporary anti-dumping measures on EU brandy imports, including cognac, in November last year as part of the escalating trade dispute between China and Brussels.
Macron, who spoke with Xi shortly before his tour of Southeast Asia, also said that France remained open to Chinese investment. He stressed, however, that companies must enjoy fair and equal conditions in both markets.
