The US envoy for Syria announced that he met with the acting Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The meeting took place in Istanbul on Saturday, after US sanctions on Damascus were lifted, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.
“I met with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shibani in Istanbul to implement US President Donald Trump's bold decision to pave the way for peace and prosperity in Syria“, said US envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack in a statement.
“I stressed that lifting sanctions on Syria will leave intact our primary goal - the lasting defeat of the Islamic State - and offer the Syrian people a chance for a better future“, the US envoy added.
Barack also praised the Syrian president “for the concrete steps taken to implement President Trump's recommendations on foreign terrorist fighters, measures to combat the Islamic State relations with Israel and regarding the camps and detention centers in northeastern Syria“.
Earlier today, the Syrian president also held a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Ankara is a staunch supporter of the new Syrian government and calls on the entire international community to lift the sanctions against Syria imposed during the rule of Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted from power in December last year.
