The Cypriot police are stepping up their inspections of illegal migration on the island after it was found that more and more migrants are arriving from Lebanon with the aim of immediately starting work for specific employers, the Cypriot newspaper “Filelefteros“ reports in its online edition, BTA reported.
According to the newspaper, recently foreigners have been found who have documents mentioning the name of a specific employer where they will start work. Usually these are restaurants, taverns and hotels, but also agricultural producers.
Similar information also comes from Lebanon, where migrants traveling by boat have been found who state that their destination is Cyprus, where they will start work, and not as before – that they will apply for asylum.
That is why the Cypriot police have started checks on companies that may be illegally employing migrants who do not have work permits. This month, Cyprus began returning Syrian citizens to their homeland, believing that after the change of the Bashar al-Assad regime, there is no risk of them being persecuted there.
