Israel has accepted the new ceasefire proposal presented by US President Donald Trump's special envoy – Steve Witkoff, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today, quoted by Israeli media and Reuters. He spoke to relatives of the hostages still being held in the Gaza Strip, BTA reports.
The Palestinian armed group "Hamas" earlier said it had received the new proposal from the mediators and was considering it.
"The movement's leadership has received Witkoff's new proposal from the mediators and is currently studying it responsibly, in the interests of our people, to bring them relief and lead to a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip," Hamas said.
The statement did not provide details on the terms of this proposal. Egypt and Qatar have stepped in to broker a truce with the Palestinian group to allow the release of the last hostages held by "Hamas".
Israel ended the last ceasefire in mid-March, AFP recalls.
"We will send a new proposal, which we hope will be delivered later today," Witkoff said last night. He expressed "good feeling about the possibility of achieving a temporary ceasefire and a lasting solution".
